In response to the ongoing drought and to ensure a sustainable water supply for all residents, the city of Katy has implemented new water restrictions for 2024. These measures aim to conserve water and promote efficient usage across the community.

Watering Schedule

To manage water consumption, the city has introduced a specific watering schedule based on street addresses:

  • Odd-numbered addresses (e.g., 101, 303, 505): Watering is allowed on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Even-numbered addresses (e.g., 102, 304, 506): Watering is allowed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Important Note:
Watering is only permitted between 6 PM and 10 AM to minimize evaporation and ensure water efficiency.

Prohibited Activities

To further conserve our water resources, the following activities are prohibited during the restrictions period:

  • Washing driveways, sidewalks, and other hard surfaces.
  • Using water to clean patios or decks.
  • Operating ornamental fountains or ponds that do not recirculate water.
  • Washing vehicles at home. (Please use commercial car washes that recycle water.)

Exceptions

Certain circumstances are exempt from these restrictions:

  • Hand-watering with a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  • Watering using drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses.
  • Newly planted sod, seed, and landscape plants are exempt for the first 30 days after planting.

Conservation Tips

Here are some practical tips to help you conserve water and comply with the restrictions:

  • Fix leaks promptly in faucets, toilets, and irrigation systems.
  • Install low-flow fixtures to reduce water usage.
  • Use mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce the need for watering.
  • Collect rainwater for irrigation purposes using rain barrels.
  • Plant drought-resistant plants that require less water.

Enforcement and Penalties

The city will enforce these restrictions through regular inspections and reports from the community. Violations of the water restrictions can result in:

  • A written warning for the first offense.
  • A fine of up to $100 for subsequent offenses.
